The St. John Bosco Chorale

The St. John Bosco (SJB) Chorale is a church-based choral group composed of students and young professionals from various fields. The SJB Chorale was formed in November of 2000 when Ms. Rose Marie Hugo, then head of the Ministry on Music and Cultural Affairs, saw the need for a core group to animate special liturgical celebrations through music at the St. John Bosco Parish, Makati. What began as a simple joint choir that unified the various choirs in the parish became a serious choral group that has been wanting to live its passion.

Since then, the group has achieved numerous accomplishments under the guidance of Mr. Lester Delgado. Among these was its active participation in “Harmonies 2004 Choral Festival” sponsored by the University of Santo Tomas’ (UST) Conservatory of Music. The group also embarked on concert tours in Hong Kong in May 2004 and February 2005 where they performed for the Filipino community and foreign audiences. They also joined several competitions in which they garnered numerous awards. The group was a two-time champion in the Paskong Himig ng Pasig competition sponsored by the City Government of Pasig (2005-2006) and the Grand Prize winner in the Kamayan Christmas Choral Competition (2002). They also won 1st runner up in PAGCOR’s 2005 Choral Competition as well as in the 2004 Himig Pop Choral Competition, where they bagged the Best Song Interpretation Award for the contest piece “Ngayon” of the late George Canseco. In addition, the group won 2nd runner up in the Harana Kay Maria Choral Competition 2005. The group also went on their 3rd International Concert Tour in European last May 2007 where they joined festivals and sang for Filipino and foreign audiences in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Italy. On October 15, 2008, they will be having their 4th International Concert Tour, this time in Canada where they will once again showcase the Filipino talent abroad.

And now with its new conductor, Vincent Olandesca, the SJB Chorale continues to focus on living their mission of sharing the gift of music with more people here and abroad through singing in masses, concerts, festivals and tours.
